When Father Humble was appointed Professor at this College in 1903, he was succeeded by the Reverend James Bird, who was a native of Perth. Father Bird enlarged and reconditioned St Brigids school so that it could now hold three hundred and twenty pupils. With the retiral of Father Bird in 1916, the Reverend William O'Carroll was appointed priest in charge. Father O'Carroll spent the last five years of his priestly life in St Brigid's and he was called to his eternal reward on 26th September 1921. Father Hugh McDonald (later Canon McDonald) who was born at Greenock, took charge of the parish for three years after the death of Father O'Carroll. He was succeeded by Father John A. Lyons (who also became a Canon) and it was during his pastorate that St Brigid's Parochial Hall was built. When Father Lyons was transferred in 1929, the Reverend Joseph Courtney took charge for the next two years.
The present church of St Brigid was built during the time of the Reverend William Stopani, a native of Lerwick, who came to Newmains in 1931. It is gothic in character and has large leaded glazed windows in the front gable. The construction is of brick, roughcast with red sandstone dressings. and accommodates 550 people. An open clerestory roof is carried on heavy timber trusses with arched hammered beams. The dream of several generations of the faithful of Newmains took tangible form when this new church was opened by His Grace Archbishop Mackintosh of Glasgow on Sunday 8th October, 1933.
