Our Lady Queen of Purgatory

The Helpers of the Holy Souls so well known for their Retreat Work at the Convent of Our Lady of Peace, Langside, Glasgow, were asked in 1948 by His Lordship the Bishop of Motherwell to come and do similar work in his new Diocese.

The property known as "Whitestripe" in Bonkle Road, Newmains, becoming available at the time, a small group of the Sisters took over, and in an incredibly short time had adapted the house, now entitled "Regina Purgatorii." to receive women and girls from all parts of Lanarkshire as Retreatants - either in groups of twenty for closed Retreats (generally at the week-ends), or for Days of Recollection, when much larger groups could come and be spiritually refreshed in the peace and quiet of the Convent Chapel and the lovely environment.

Besides this Retreat Work for souls, the Sisters visited the sick in their homes and in the hospitals and sanatoria of the area undertook the instruction of Converts, and the holding of Club meetings for girls, Sodalities of Our Lady, etc.
