Welcome
to the Web Site of St Brigid’s Roman Catholic Parish in the Diocese of Motherwell,
Scotland.
St
Brigid’s is a thriving parish of some 1,600 souls, with a proud history in
Newmains that stretches back to 1871. Indeed the chapel/school established
here in 1871 is still standing - though it is now a Parish Centre serving
the social needs of the whole community.
The
parish of St Brigid’s was established in 1896, and the church built in 1933.
We celebrated our centenary in 1996. In this website you’ll find lots of interesting
information about the people and events of the first 100 years. This year
we celebrate the 75th. Anniversary of the opening of our Church.
Perhaps
you are a member of St Brigid’s parish; or maybe a former member. an active
member of the Catholic Church, or some other Church; or it may be that you
are not closely aligned to any Church. You might know Newmains ‘like the
back of your hand’ - or just finding Scotland in your atlas may be a major
problem. No matter, thank you for your interest in us and for taking the time
to visit our Site.
Today
we celebrate the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Forever associated with the
Church in Rome where they both met death by martyrdom, we celebrate the vision
of St. Peter who realised if he could take the Gospel message to the heart
of the great Empire, then he could fulfil what the Lord charged the Apostles
"take the Good News to the ends of the earth" In St. Paul we celebrate
his conversion, his love and zeal for the Risen Christ and his burning missionary
spirit which led him to preach the Gospel in almost every Mediterranean country
before following Peter to Rome.
We
wish all of you who are looking forward to a holiday, a change of routine,
or just a rest, a pleasant and safe time whether you are going away or staying
at home.
To
all former parishioners we remind you we celebrate the 75th. anniversary of
the opening of St. Brigid's present Church. Maybe you could join us then.

Hugh Kelly, Parish Priest
